The VisTracks application development platform provides a suite of services that support the creation and deployment of a new generation of spatial-temporal solutions. Developers building on this platform can quickly construct Web 2.0-based solutions that offer end users powerful insights into the location and the movement of key items of interest over time. Applications built with this framework run in industry-standard browsers with no additional client software to install or maintain. Furthermore, complete solutions, including all necessary data, can optionally be hosted in the VisTracks application cloud, eliminating any server deployment and management requirements and bringing a zero-impact solution to the end user.
There are several ways in which application developers can leverage the features of the VisTracks platform. At a basic level, it is possible to create some simple but powerful applications merely by providing URLs to properly formatted data feeds. This approach eliminates the need for any custom coding or configuration.
For more specialized applications, developers can create custom “plug-ins” that expand the standard VisTracks user interface to include additional facilities specific to a particular domain. The plug-in framework used in the VisTracks system relies on the facilities provided by the Microsoft Silverlight framework.
It is also possible to create applications that access the spatial, tracking, and analytic services that underlie the VisTracks system. Through standard web-service protocols, applications can interact with the data and operations provided by these services and incorporate them directly into existing applications.
